With a passion for light and design, Timo Niskanen founded Himmee in 2014. The company’s philosophy revolves around timelessness, ease of use and high-quality materials.

For Timo, lights are like small sculptures. As the founder and designer of Himmee, he enjoys his freedom of expression, as light design provides him a way to bring his visions to life – sustainably.

What matters most is that the light functions as it’s expected to; but the design must be beautiful to look at even when the lamp is switched off. When a stylish light has been made of high-quality materials and it doesn’t follow passing trends, it will never go out of fashion. Then, the light can stand the test of time, use and rapidly changing fads.

For us living high up in the northern hemisphere, light – or the lack of it – is always present. Throughout the polar night natural light is very limited, whereas in the summer, there’s light everywhere around the clock. In these unique conditions we can all call ourselves experts on light.

In the dark times of the year, we need beautiful, high-quality light. A good light design helps us create different kinds of atmospheres both in our surroundings as well as our mindsets.

In the family-run business, Niskanen and his wife Hanna Valli take care of everything from building the products to shipping, marketing, and sales. The company is based in Vallila, Helsinki, a former industrial district now popular amongst creatives.

We say no to single-use culture. Himmee’s timeless design, high quality, and durability ensure that our products don’t grow old as trends keep passing and that they last for generations to come.

In our design, we always source and use our materials responsibly, using only top-notch materials that come from as near as possible, mostly from Finnish subcontractors. To ensure high quality, we build the lights ourselves at our studio in Vallila, Helsinki.

Our products have been designed to last both time and use in terms of quality and design. However, should an unexpected accident occur, we deliver spare parts and repair the products to ensure their lifecycle is as long as possible.

The name Himmee describes the company with its multiple meanings. In Finnish, the word ‘himmeä’ is often said ‘himmee’ in spoken language, referring to a light that is gentle and soft, not too bright.

In slang, himmee can be used to as a synonym for something that’s great, grand, or cool. That’s exactly what Himmee products and their design, materials, and manufacturing methods stand for.
